Arnab Goswami: Arrest of Republic TV founder in suicide case

An accused in the suicide case of Annab Goswami, one of India's top news anchors, has been arrested.

Police said they are investigating the alleged role of the founder of Republic TV in the death of the architect who created his studio.

According to Naik, he took his life in 2018 and his wife accused Mr. Goswami of not paying his fees.

Mr Goswami and the Republic TV network deny the allegations.

Mr Naik's wife said she had left a suicide note in which she blamed Mr Goswami for his death.

She is campaigning on social media for a full investigation into the case.  Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh recently ordered a special team to probe the case.

A police team on Wednesday arrested Goswami from his Mumbai home.  The visuals show a quarrel between Mr. Goswami and the police team.

Republic TV has accused the police of "molesting" members of Mr Goswami's family - police officials have not yet been able to comment.

Mr. Goswami is known for his aggressive style of anchoring and interrogation.  But his critics say he has always come across as sympathetic to right-wing politics in the country.

In recent months, he has been sharply critical of the Mumbai police over its handling of the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput.  He had repeatedly accused the Mumbai police of being lenient in investigating the star's death.

Mr. Goswami is also critical of the Maharashtra state government, which is run by a coalition led by the regional Shiv Sena - Prime Minister Narendra Modi's former ally of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.

Republic TV says that Mr.  Goswami has been targeted for his journalism.

Many on social media, even those who do not like the brand of his journalism, have been questioned by the police on how to arrest him.
