Balrampur: Anger grows after new India 'gang rape' death

India is shocked by the death of another Dalit woman in the days following the alleged gangrape.

The 22-year-old was pulled into a vehicle and raped after she went to apply for admission to a local school, her mother told the BBC.

The news comes after the death of another 19-year-old Dalit woman on Tuesday after she was gang-raped by upper-caste men.

Dalits are at the bottom of the caste system.  Despite laws to protect them, they face widespread discrimination.

Police have registered complaints of rape and murder and arrested two persons in connection with a recent case in Balrampur district.

The previous attack took place about 500 km (310 miles) away in Hathras district.  The victim was critically injured and died at a Delhi hospital on Tuesday after fighting for her life for two weeks.

Police said Thursday that the victim had not been raped before, according to a forensic report.  But she was raped and strangled on September 14 at a Delhi hospital.  The woman's family also said she was raped - her mother told the media that she found her daughter naked, bloodied and seriously injured on a farm.

Another victim was also killed on Tuesday, but the news was picked up by the national media on Thursday after a strong reaction on social media to sexual harassment and racial violence in India.

Dalits, formerly known as untouchables, were publicly embarrassed and attacked by upper caste Hindus for generations.

What is the caste system of India?

What do we know about the latest incident?

The victim's mother told the BBC the family panicked when she did not arrive home at her usual time on Tuesday evening.  He said his daughter went to a nearby school on Tuesday morning to apply for admission.  As she was returning home, a group of three or four people stopped her and put her in their vehicle.

"She looked very weak when she arrived. Our daughter could not speak or stand. When we asked her what happened, she could not answer."

Ten minutes later, the victim complained of a "burning sensation" in her abdomen, prompting family members to take her to a local hospital.

While local journalist Saurabh Mishra said that while the authorities were not confirming whether the victim had been raped, he also did not deny the family's allegation.

  Has there been a reaction?

The news has sparked furious reactions on social media.  The former chief minister of the state, who now sits in opposition, attacked the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.

Akhilesh Yadav tweeted that after Hathras, another daughter has been gangraped and brutalized in Balrampur.  He added that the government should take swift action in the incident.

On Twitter, the case has been one of the top discussion trends, with thousands of tweets by political leaders and Indians announcing the attack.

The previous incident also continued to dominate social media and news.

On Thursday, opposition Congress party leaders Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi went to Hathras to meet the victim's family after the leaders' vehicle was stopped by officials.  Video footage on social media showed Gandhi walking down the aisle with Congress workers despite police officers trying to stop him.

The two leaders were later seen being taken away in vehicles by police.

Hundreds of Samajwadi Party activists sitting in opposition in the state have also come out with shocking pictures and video footage of them being surrounded and detained by police in the area.

On Wednesday, activists denounced police after the family accused him of burying her body without her permission.  Demonstrations also took place in Hathra and other cities, including the capital Delhi.

However, a senior official of the district administration denied the allegation, saying the family's consent had been obtained.

Since the mass rape and murder of a woman in Delhi in 2014, rape and sexual violence have been a hot topic in India, leading to strong protests and changes in the country's rape laws.

But there is no indication of crimes against women and young girls. view
