Five million coronavirus infections in India

The number of confirmed coronaviruses in India has exceeded five million, officials say, second only to the US in the world.

The virus seems to be spreading faster in India than in any other country, with more than 90,000 being transmitted daily for five days by Tuesday.

More than 1,000,000 people have died amid reports of intensive care beds and shortages of oxygen.

But the mortality rate is lower than in countries with high cases.

The infection has risen since the government continued to lift sanctions across the country in March to boost the economy, which lost millions of jobs to the virus.

The gym is the latest to reopen, while schools, colleges and cinema halls remain closed.  But most workplaces and markets have returned to normal, and many cities are allowing restaurants and bars to continue serving alcohol, which is likely to increase congestion.

  Rumors hamper testing in India

  How did India get here?

In the early stages of Covid-1 of, India did quite well, imposing strict lockdowns, but then the virus hit megacities like Mumbai and the capital, Delhi, before moving to smaller cities and rural areas.

Despite the increase, the government has relaxed restrictions to recover from the effects of the initial lockdown between March and June - which has hit the economy hard.

As India opens up and people return to work, the number of Covid-19 cases has skyrocketed.  Some 600,000 cases were added last week.

After adding 90,123 cases in the last 24 hours, India's case load is at 5,020,359.

Despite the virus spreading to every corner of the country, including remote tribes in India's Andaman Islands, the burden of the case is coming from most of the five states.

How many Covid-19 deaths are missing in India?

Why won't India accept how Kovid-19 is spreading?

Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in India, also account for more than 60% of active cases.

But the increase in the number of cases is also partly a reflection of the increased testing - India conducts more than one million tests a day.

What about reports of oxygen shortages?

As the number of cases has increased, so has the demand for oxygen.

Oxygen producers say demand for industrial oxygen has also increased as more factories reopen.

"This is a question of livelihood that India is now grappling with," BBC India correspondent Sautik Vishwas said in a report.  Our correspondent adds that India will now need to increase capacity to ensure that both industries and patients do not get in trouble.

Most oxygen plants are built near cities and large cities.  Therefore, Covid-1 patients have to be sent by special lorries carrying cryogenic tanks to the areas where patients are filling hospitals - there are about 1,100 such vehicles in India.

For example, many areas - the capital, Delhi - do not have a single oxygen producer, and all supplies come from neighboring regions.
