The 22-year-old plays the role of the deity Lord Ram in Ramlila, an annual folk drama of the Ramayana, a two-millennium-old epic written by Hindus.
Rama is the protagonist of this enduring tale of family obligations, loyalty, hardships and sacrifice. But, for Mr. Pandey, the epidemic has been a double-edged sword.
They end on Dussehra, which burns the effigy of Ravana, the 10-headed demon-king - symbolizing the victory of good over evil.
It dates back to the 16th century and is believed to have originated in the holy city of Varanasi.
But Kovid-19 has dampened this year's celebration. Hundreds or thousands, depending on where Ramleela is taking place, have to watch these performances. The largest capital is held in Delhi, but has been canceled this year.
Mr. Pandey is performing in one of the few that has been allowed to go further - in the city of Allahabad, run by the Katra Ramlila Committee, which has been performing for 20 years now.
Instead of the usual crowd of several hundreds, their audience would be limited to 200 people. They are also recording videos for YouTube and Facebook, but this does not please Mr. Pandey.
Ramlila is no ordinary theater performance. It is a bright, joyous celebration that is both religious and entertaining. The actors play their parts with pride, while the audience often joins with lords of Lord Rama celebrating their victory over Ravana.
A religious studies scholar who took part in a series of Ramlilas in the late 1970s wrote, "The days of devotees are curved when they are there ... Ramlila is ever brighter, splendid, entertaining."
The performance takes place anywhere between three or 30 days, depending on whether the congregation in question applies the entirety of the epic or its sections. In Ramnagar, UP, one of the most famous Ramlilaas, the entire city transforms into a set, as both actors and spectators move through it, revealing an ancient tale.
In addition to the actual Ramleelas, there are also mini-versions, which take the form of lively scenes rejuvenating on the tableaux traveling in the neighborhood. This year it is not possible, reducing the income of many artists - actors, directors, choreographers and all those who help with makeup, costumes, lighting and set design.
