 In the summer of 2005, he became a retired army officer.  Gopinath announced that he would fly to Indians for a rupee or less.   It was the incredible sales pitch of the founder of the country’s first budget airline.   Air Deccan, based on European budget carriers such as their two-year-old no-frills airline, EasyJet and Rainier, has already made it cheaper for millions of Indians to fly.  Captain Gopinath's tickets cost half as much as the charge levied by the rivals.   Now its airline has introduced "Dynamic Pricing" where a small number of "early bird" customers can travel in rupees.  Latecomers will pay a higher ticket price, which will still be significantly lower than competitors.  Not surprisingly, the booking counters were filled with customers, many of them first time flyers.  This kind of pricing by critics will destroy the industry.   "One rupee ticket took away people's imagination and quickly became a buzzword," Captain Gop...

Covid-19 cases increased in Delhi due to winter season

 As the temperature plummets and air pollution rises to dangerous levels, the Indian capital Delhi will fight the winter battle in the Covid-19 cases.   More than 8,500 cases were confirmed in the city on Wednesday alone, its daily record.   It also added 85 deaths in one day, exceeding 7,000 in total.   The sharp rise in cases after months of loneliness has also put pressure on hospitals - more than half of the available beds are already occupied.   Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has written a letter to the federal government seeking more beds in government hospitals amid mounting public pressure.   8..6th and counting, India is currently the second largest case in the world.  But it has been on a downward trend since mid-September: despite testing continuing, the daily case count dropped from a low of about 100,000 to a low of 37,000.   Daily national numbers hover between 40,000-50,000 - India reported about 48,200 cases on Wednesday But Delhi ...

China wants to suppress Internet giants

 China has proposed new rules aimed at controlling the power of its largest internet companies.   These rules suggest increasing unrest in Beijing with the growing influence of digital platforms.   The new rules could affect homegrown tech giants such as Alibaba, Ant Kit Group and food delivery platform Metuan, such as Tencent.   The move comes as the European Union and the US are also trying to curb the power of internet giants.   Chinese tech stocks fell sharply after the proposed rules were announced on Tuesday.   The news came as JD.com and Alibaba were preparing for Singles Day, the annual sale of online sales which is their biggest day of the year.   Selling continued on Wednesday, with Alibaba, JD.com, Tencent, Xiaomi and Mituan all hitting lows, reducing their combined value by more than b 200bn (150bn).   What do the rules do?     The new rules will try to prevent companies from sharing sensitive customer data, creating teams to...

Hurricane season: A record number of hurricanes named the Atlantic

Indian diver who has saved the lives of more than 106 people

 For years, Shiva had helped police find the body of Hussein Sagar Lake in the south Indian city of Hyderabad.  And then one day, he stopped someone before they jumped, saving lives for the first time.  BBC Telugu's Balla Satish's report.   Police in India are underpaid and poorly trained.  Many do not know how to swim and are not funded to hire professional divers.     But when Shiva volunteered, he says, he returned.  "They initially refused, saying I was too young. Arnab Goswami: Arrest of Republic TV founder in suicide case

 An accused in the suicide case of Annab Goswami, one of India's top news anchors, has been arrested.   Police said they are investigating the alleged role of the founder of Republic TV in the death of the architect who created his studio.   According to Naik, he took his life in 2018 and his wife accused Mr. Goswami of not paying his fees.   Mr Goswami and the Republic TV network deny the allegations.   Mr Naik's wife said she had left a suicide note in which she blamed Mr Goswami for his death.   She is campaigning on social media for a full investigation into the case.  Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh recently ordered a special team to probe the case.   A police team on Wednesday arrested Goswami from his Mumbai home.  The visuals show a quarrel between Mr. Goswami and the police team.   Republic TV has accused the police of "molesting" members of Mr Goswami's family - police officials have not yet been able to comment.  ...
